Actress Juliet Asante petitions Parliament over vigilantism

Ghanaian actress Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante has presented a petition to the Parliament of Ghana to help disband vigilantism in the country.

She presented the petition on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, after her peace walk against vigilantism.

The petition was received by Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, a Principal Assistant Clerk in Parliament and Kate Addo, Acting Director of Public Affairs in Parliament, on behalf of the Clerk of Parliament, Emmanuel Anyimadu.

According to Juliet Asante, she is scared about what could potentially happen with the emergence of such political militia groups in Ghana.
She, therefore, called on government to deal with the situation in a month.

“We are giving the government one month to disband vigilantism. And when I say government I mean everybody who is part of the leadership and management of Ghana. This includes all the key political parties that are represented at parliament,” she said.

Juliet who embarked on a peace walk against political vigilantism today, Tuesday, from the African Regent Hotel to the Parliament House told Citi TV she would keep walking until her plea is granted.

“If by one month time nothing happens, we will keep on walking. I hope Ghanaians will join me and raise their voices against vigilantism,” she noted.

Juliet Asante started her acting career at the age of 17 and was awarded ‘Best Actress’ in Ghana in 2001.

She later went to the National Film and Television Institute in Ghana, where she got her first class honours in Film Directing.

She also holds a Diploma from the New York Film Academy and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Juliet has starred in films such as Twin Lovers, Fresh Blood, Tears of Blood, Ripples and Thread of Ananse.

She appeared in the 1996 film Deadly Voyage as Albert Mensah’s wife.

She has written, directed and produced shows on Ghana television, such as Obaby, a dating show, and Secrets, a drama series for which she is also executive producer.

In the last quarter of 2014, she completed work on her first feature film, Silver Rain. She owns the Eagle Drama Workshop.

Asante is the editor of the entertainment magazine, Entertainment Today and its companion television programme. She is also a blogger for The Huffington Post.

She was the organizer of the Voice Of Africa Forum, aimed at closing the gap between media entrepreneurs and investments, and an active participant in the Africa Media Initiative.

She mentors at the MIT “Legatum Center”.

Juliet served as president of the Ghana chapter of Women in Film and Television International.

She is currently the Executive Director of Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF).
