Aquaman has officially earned the title of being the top-grossing DC comics adaptation ever to be made after it earned $1.09 billion at the global box office, surpassing the previous record-holder The Dark Knight Rises.

As reported by Box Office MojoAquaman has earned 71 percent of its monetary success overseas. All the while, it’s still a solid hit in the United States, sitting at No. 3 at the domestic box office more than a month after its initial release. Previously, Aquaman became the highest grossing flick within the DC Extended Universe, beating out Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which clocked $873.6 million.

It also became the first DCEU movie to hit the billion dollar mark. On a wider scale, the movie is the third-largest Warner Bros. showing worldwide and ranks as the 25th largest worldwide release of all time. While it’s a clear win for DC fans everywhere, Aquaman’s number still sits behind Marvel Cinematic Universe’s highest grossing features, six of them to be exact.

Director James Wan is reportedly in talks for a sequel with Warner Bros. He’ll reportedly have the option of hand-picking the writers to create the second script and will get to decide if he’ll want to stick around to direct it upon completion.
