The chief executive officer (CEO) of Hollard Ghana Holdings Limited, Patience Akyianu, has expressed the opinion that the idea of a woman being submissive in a marriage setting is a phenomenon that can be degrading.

Akyianu was speaking on Joy FM’s Home Affairs on Saturday, March 9, 2019. The CEO was of the view that submissiveness is a human quality that “does not come to most of us naturally.”

She added that: “You have to consciously decide to be submissive. The word [submission] brings to mind subservience. It almost feels degrading. You have to go out of your way to be humble.”

Akyianu was part of a panel that was discussing the conflicts that ensue in the life of a professional woman who is also married.

Akyianu told show host Edem Knight-Tay,“many of us are not wired to submit. It is a human thing rather than an executive not being able to submit.”

She continued that submission is a “Biblical concept especially in marriage” adding, “marriage is God’s idea, not man’s.”

The Hollard Ghana CEO however, did not totally rule out the possibility of submission in marriage.

She said: “If you love somebody and you respect them, we are hoping that love will surpass all. Love will surpass the difficulty that comes with submission.”

Meanwhile, Myjoyonline.com has apologised to Akyianu because according to the news portal, “she complained of being taken out of context and distortion of her submissions.”

The news portal however did not specifically point to the statement or sentiment that Akyianu was referring to.
