Charterhouse created ‘fertile ground’ for VGMA confusion – PPP Director

The confusion between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy that marred the 2019 Ghana Music Awards should be blamed on Charterhouse, the Director of Operations for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu has said.

On The Big Issue, he insisted that “Charterhouse has wronged the young people Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale.”

Mr. Ofori Owusu even said there was the danger of a disaster akin to a football stadium stampede.

“How come you don’t mention the limited liability company that is working for profit that has not done its work well, [and] that has created a fertile ground for what happened to happen?”

Following the confusion, in which Stonebwoy brandished a handgun, the two dancehall stars have been put before a court in Accra and also banned indefinitely from the Ghana Music Awards.

But Mr. Ofori Owusu insisted that “these young people [Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy] are plying their craft and faking gangsterism. They are not gangsters.”

“Shatta came from a good home. His dad has been a diplomat. Stonebwoy too comes from a good home. They are not street children…These young people are musicians portraying a certain image looking for noko fio.”

In his defense of the two artistes, he added that Charterhouse’s actions and inactions culminated in the confusion.

“You create the condition and this thing happens and then you call a press conference and say you have banned them. You used their images… you have had an economic benefit out of them.”

What happened on the night?

When Stonebwoy walked to the stage to receive his award for being named Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year, Shatta Wale and his entourage also began making their way towards the stage.

This triggered Stonebwoy’s manager to confront the team which resulted in fisticuffs with one of Shatta Wale team members.

The situation escalated into a brawl on the stage during which Stonebwoy was seen brandishing a gun.

He later apologised for the incident when he returned to the stage to receive another award.
