Fire service personnel struggle to put out Makola mall fire 5

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have been trying to put out a fire at the Makola shopping centre since Friday morning.

According to the fire officers, due to the level of smoke emanating from the basement, they have been unable to locate the source of the fire.

They have since resorted to the use of a smoke extractor to enable them get full access to the basement to fight the fire.

“The fire keeps coming from the basement of the shop, we are trying our best to quench it but the problem is, the shop has only one entry,” Head of Public Relations at the Makola fire station, DOII Ellis Robinson Okoe told the media.

He further noted that a Taxi driver drove to the station to inform them of the fire in the morning.

“It was a Taxi Driver who drove to our station to inform us of the fire outbreak, we had to use the wrong route to get here because of the traffic.”

The Makola fire station on Friday, February 22nd responded to a distress call of a fire outbreak at the warehouse of City Gold Jewellery at the Makola Shopping Mall in Accra.

The fire, according to eye witness started around 7:30am in the morning.

“We saw people running out of the shop shouting and carrying goods, the next thing we saw was thick smoke emanating from the shop, so I went to help them carry some of the goods out of the shop to the other shop over there,” an eye witness recounts.
