According to the Chicago Sun Times, the woman claiming to be rapper Johnny May Cash’s girlfriend suggests that she was acting out of self-defense when she fatally shot the 27-year-old. While in custody, 28-year-old Brianna Gibbs told police she feared for her safety following a dispute with her boyfriend on Sunday where he pulled out a chunk of her hair. After a brief tussle, Johnny May Cash’s gun allegedly fell to the floor prompting Gibbs to pick it up as she fled out of the house. She then claimed that he “aggressively” came after her which made her pull the trigger.

Investigators say Gibbs fired several shots at Cash as he approached her. After being shot, Cash was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Gibbs went to a relative’s house following the ordeal before being taken to the hospital herself where she was treated for bruises on her legs and chest, and sustained a split lip that required stitches.

Gibbs had her bail set at $100,000 after a judge seemingly bought her claim that the shooting was in self-defense. She’s set to be back in court May 9.
