Kumasi: There are no feuding factions in NDC – Kwame Zu 5

The National Democratic Congress [NDC] Ashanti Regional Secretary Kwame Zu has denied the existence of feuding groups in the party in the Ashanti Region.

A shooting incident which left one man dead and another injured has led to suggestions that the violence was set off by tensions between two factions in the party in the region.

Speaking on the Eyewitness News Kwame Zu said the deceased person and the other injured in the shooting incident do not belong to any factions in the party because there are no factions in the party.

The regional secretary said the deceased and injured persons in the shooting incident are known to party members but name their names would not be made public yet.

“All I can say, for now, is that they are known party members of the NDC, as to the specific names of the victims, we would prefer to speak to the family members first before we can make that public. All I know is we have one party, as to faction in the party I have no idea,” he said.

“The regrettable incident happened at our regional office, while there was an ongoing meeting. We heard gunshots from outside the building. When we came out there was a little chaos, the narrative we heard suggests that two men on motorbikes holding gun had shot indiscriminately into the gathering of party members outside of the office. Unfortunately, we have lost one of the men, and one is in critical condition at the Komofo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” he said.

Police have said four alleged members of pro-National Democratic Congress group, the Hawks, are suspected to be behind the attack at the Ashanti Regional NDC office in Kumasi that left one dead and one other injured.

A statement from the police named the suspects as Hussein Barnabas, Damso, Mijima and Abu Taliban.

The crime scene has since been cordoned off by the Ashanti Regional Police as investigations into the incident have begun.

The NDC Secretariat in the region has condemned the violent act describing it as regrettable.

The party first confirmed that one person had died from the incident.

“We regret to announce that one of the two men who was shot has passed on and the other is in a critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).”

Former President John Dramani Mahama also said the incident was “clearly a criminal act”.

“I strongly condemn this incident. It is clearly a criminal act, and I call on the police and relevant security agencies to investigate and immediately apprehend the culprits and subject them to the full rigours of the law.”
