Mason remanded for defiling 12-year-old girl

A 35-year-old mason has been remanded into custody by an Accra circuit court for allegedly filing a 12-year-old girl who is a hawker at East Legon Hills in Accra.

The accused person, David Zebede was said to have forcibly had sexual intercourse with the victim (name withheld) under the pretext of buying buff loaves from her.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement.

The court presided over by Mrs. Eva Williams Banaman handed him to the police and adjourned the case to July 10, 2019.

Prosecution’s case

The facts as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire were that, the victim together with the complainant and the accused all lives at East Legon Hills in Accra.

According to him, on June 18, 2019, the accused person, MrZebede spotted the girl at the entrance of his gate selling buff loaves.

David called the victim under the pretext of buying some of the buff loaves and managed to pull her into his room. He then allegedly forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said the victim shouted for help and was rescued by people who heard her screaming.

He added that the accused was then sent to Lakeside Police Station in Accra.

He said the case was later referred to the office of Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DVVSU) at Adenta for investigations.

“Upon receipt of complaint, police medical report form was issued to the complainant to send the victim to any government hospital for examination and treatment which she did” he stated.

He continued that a bone age examination done on the victim at the Police Hospital revealed that she is between the age of 12 and 13.

The prosecutor also said, “In the course of investigations, David denied in his caution statement that he had sexual intercourse with the victim. He rather accused those who arrested him of having a grand plot to wrongly accuse him of a crime he has not committed”.

“However, police medical report form which was dully endorsed by Dr. Yussif Andani of Madina Polyclinic revealed that the Hymen of the victim is completely torn in the 5 O’clock and 9 O’clock regions with bleedings at the edges”.

After investigations, the accused was charged accordingly, the prosecutor stated.
