NICKI MINAJ BREAKS MISSY ELLIOTT’S RECORD AS LONGEST-CHARTING FEMALE RAPPER ON HOT 100

Nicki Minaj has broken Missy Elliott’s record as the longest-charting female rapper on the Billboard Hot 100.

According to Chart Data, the rap icons had been tied for the record, before Minaj edged out Elliott on New Year’s Day (January 1).

“@NickiMinaj becomes the female rapper with the most consecutive years charting a single on the Hot 100 (2010 – 2023) breaking a tie with Missy Elliott (1996* – 2008),” the tweet read.

The song that secured Nicki the record was “Super Freaky Girl,” which sits at No. 51 on this week’s Hot 100. The song previously peaked at No. 1 last August and has held firm on the chart for 20 weeks.

Nicki Minaj has showered Missy Elliott with nothing but love over the years and most recently credited her with “kicking down doors” shortly after learning she’d receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at last year’s MTV VMA’s.

“Congratulations to @NICKIMINAJ on this achievement!” Missy wrote on Twitter at the time, saluting the Young Money superstar.

Nicki replied: “Mumbling & cackling??? nah omg thank you Missy. You kicked down this [door]. Nothing but Love & Respect for your iconic artistry. #VMAs #NickiVmas #VideoVanguard.”

Missy Elliott was previously honored with the Video Vanguard Award in 2019, becoming the first female rapper to receive the honor.

However, Elliott was later trolled by some of Nicki Minaj’s Barbz fanbase, who attacked the Virginia lyricist on Twitter after she questioned whether there was a difference between a “classic” record and a “hit” record.

“I have a question…Is there a difference between A Hit & A Classic record or no?” she tweeted. “And if so what is this difference?”

The tweet had come a few days after “Super Freaky Girl” made chart history by becoming the first female solo rap song to debut atop the Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill’s 1998 hit “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

Many Barbz members assumed the tweet was a dig at their leader. “Missy Elliott always have something to say surrounding Nicki Minaj indirectly,” one fan wrote. “I see her dirty spirit. It’s been like that for years. Give it up mama.”

Another wrote: “Missy so miserable and messy bitch don’t let me get started these old bitches really mad and miserable go pay ya rent and stay in ya bum ass place these old and new school bitches make me sick!!! Nicki can’t win from either generation of female rappers.”

The four-time Grammy winner ended up clarifying her original tweet and responded to the hateful responses.

“I love so many of yall answers,” Missy Elliott tweeted. “This was a back & forth with my producer friends over music. Is there a difference between Classics & hits & he said it’s more preference. So y’all helped. A few chose 2 be hurtful but understand this came from a positive place.”
