Odumase Krobo accident: Brake wasn’t functioning – Survivors 5

Some survivors of the Asitey accident which occurred on Saturday night have disclosed that the bus developed mechanical faults several times in the course of the journey before the crash that killed seven occupants and left several others injured.

The injured who spoke from their admission beds at the Atua government hospital said even though the Daewoo saloon bus with registration number GV 2497 14 stopped many times on the way to fix a recurring mechanical fault, the driver kept assuring them that he could manage the situation.

Unfortunately, the vehicle plunged into a ditch at the Asitey curve, leading to several casualties.

Meanwhile, 37-year-old mother of the five-month-old baby who survived the accident unscathed, Joana Amewugah said her baby’s escape is an act of miracle.

The infant was the only occupant aboard the ill fated trip that survived the accident without a scratch.

Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the Atua Government hospital, Marylove Nai Williams said out of the 40 casualties who were rushed to the facility on Saturday, ten were still on admission with others either referred to other hospitals or discharged as at Monday morning.

She however appealed for ambulances to be supplied to the hospital and for the deplorable nature of the road leading to the hospital to be fixed.

The Daewoo saloon bus belonging to the Volta River Authority with 61 parishioners of the Saint Barbara Catholic church in Akosombo on board was returning to Akosombo from Akim Oda where they had attended a funeral.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Atua Government Hospital, the St Martin De Porres Hospital, the VRA hospital and the Koforidua regional hospital.

The enclave which is riddled with several sharp curves has recorded several accidents over the years as many continue to perish.
