Tory Lanez Reportedly Fires Lawyer & Hires Suge Knight’s Former Attorney 5

Tory Lanez has reportedly made a change to his legal counsel and has a pending court date on the horizon.

On Sunday (January 8), Southern California-based legal reporter Meghann Cuniff, who covered the trial of the State of California vs Daystar Peterson (Tory Lanez), shared new information about the Canadian rapper’s legal moves since he was found guilty on three felony assault charges for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.

According to Cuniff, Tory Lanez has an upcoming court date on January 10 and is now purportedly being represented by Suge Knight’s former lawyer, David Kenner. He was previously represented by George Mgdesyan.

“Regarding Tory Lanez’s Tuesday court date, yes, there is a date listed on the jail roster,” Cuniff wrote on Twitter January 8. “It’s not on Judge Herriford’s calendar, and he’s got a bunch of other stuff at the time. Attorney David Kenner confirmed to me last week he’s now representing Tory.”

Cuniff continued in another tweet writing, “Kenner is a longtime criminal defense attorney whose clients include former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight.” She added, “Anyone with actual experience in criminal law (not all lawyers) will tell you he’s joining the case a bit late: Before trial would have been better.”

In another tweet, Cuniff explained that it’s not possible to determine what the January 10 court date is about due to the fact that Los Angeles Superior Court doesn’t make court documents available to the public.

“Penal Code 132 regards false evidence and witness tampering. (132 is also Judge Herriford’s court department number.),” she wrote in part. “@LASuperiorCourt actively hides court documents from the public, so it’s really impossible to find out what exactly is going on based on the court record.” She followed up with yet another tweet in the detailed thread, expressing her views about what may be going on while also outlining possible legal motions that may be filed in the case in the future.

“Some clues about what’s going on: Prosecutors tried to add a bribery count to Tory’s charges during trial, which the judge rejected,” Cuniff started off. “Any post-conviction motion from David Kenner regarding false evidence or witness testimony is very unlikely to come this quick.”

Following eight days of trial, nearly two days of closing arguments and a day of deliberations, a grand jury found Tory Lanez, who plead not guilty to all counts, guilty of all three charges levied against him on December 23.

The three counts were felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

While Tory Lanez still has yet to be sentenced in his guilty conviction, his alleged new lawyer’s former client Suge Knight, was sentenced to 28 years in prison in October of 2018 for the hit-and-run death of Terry Carter during the 2015 filming of Straight Outta Compton.
