Johnny Depp’s first big comeback movie, Jeanne du Barry, has yet to hit theaters. The upcoming French film will be the first Johnny Depp project to follow his defamation lawsuit win over Amber Heard. Jeanne du Barry, originally titled La Favorite, is a biographical period drama that follows Johnny Depp’s King Louis XV, who falls in love with Jeanne, a working-class courtesan played by Maïwenn.
While speculation about his return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise continues, the actor will appear next in Jeanne du Barry, where he’ll play the 2023 film’s male lead. Though it’s obviously not a project on the same level as his Pirates of the Caribbean movies, it being his comeback film makes it a highly anticipated movie. The film’s French release date has just been announced, and between its release and the location of its world premiere, there’s enough reason to be excited. And though the movie’s release date in the U.S. isn’t completely known, there are enough indications to make an educated guess about when it could hit theaters or streaming services.

Jeanne du Barry will have its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which is where movies are celebrated more than anywhere else in the world. Traditionally, the film selection is generally made up of the best and most acclaimed releases of any given year. This bodes extremely well for Jeanne du Barry, especially as it isn’t just having its world premiere at the festival, but is the opening film of the 2023 event. The 2021 festival’s opening film was the acclaimed musical drama Annette, and the 2018 festival’s opening film was the Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz-starring Everybody Knows, and Jeanne du Barry joins those critically acclaimed films. However, the movie is not debuting in competition and won’t be eligible to win the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honor and one of the most prestigious movie awards in the industry.

Jeanne Du Barry Will Be Theatrically Released In Europe In May & September
Not every country has a confirmed release date for the movie, but Jeanne du Barry will be released in France and Switzerland on the same day as its premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The film’s release in the Netherlands and Spain is also confirmed for September 14 and September 29 respectively. Presumably, the film’s release in other European countiries will fall between those dates. But that will depend on which distributors the production companies work with for the film’s release in those countries. There’s also the matter of the movie’s reception, as there could be a bidding war for the distribution rights if the film becomes a hit at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Will Jeanne Du Barry Be Theatrically Released In The U.S.?
Given the positive sign that the movie is opening in Cannes, it’s likely that producers will want a release date during awards season in the United States, which arrives during the fourth quarter of the year. After all, production companies often try to release serious awards contenders as close to The Golden Globes, the Academy Awards, and other ceremonies as possible. As Hollywood loves comeback stories, it’s likely that the 2023 Johnny Depp film will be released between October and December in the States, especially if the film lives up to the hype.
Johnny Depp’s Jeanne du Barry still needs a distributor for the United States, and negotiations will probably happen following the film’s release at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. But there’s also a chance that the movie will skip theaters and go straight to a streaming service. One possibility is that it’ll end up on Netflix. Jeanne du Barry has already been confirmed to be released on Netflix in France 15 months after the movie’s theatrical release. However, the U.S. won’t have to wait 15 months, as that long gap is simply because movies aren’t legally allowed to be released on streaming services within 15 months of their theatrical releases in France. If Jeanne du Barry hits Netflix in the U.S., chances are it will still release in the winter of 2023.
