According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a 24-year-old later identified as rapper Lil Mister was shot and killed in Englewood Friday evening. Those taking a special interest in the Chicago Drill Movement will recall hearing Lil Mister’s name, for he wasn’t just a prolific artist during the movement’s highest moment of visibility; Mister was also a cousin of the scene’s most prominent graduate Lil Durk. As Vibe has reported, prominent Chicago rappers like Cheese and Kollege Kidd confirmed the unidentified victim as “Lil Mister” without a shred of doubt. Although quite young at the time of his passing, Lil Mister has been entrenched in the Drill scene since 2012, when his biggest hit “No Lackin” first started gaining traction in the streets. Some would argue “No Lackin” played a pivotal role like no other in breaking the Chicago slang to the masses.

Born Antwon Fields, Lil Mister never mustered enough momentum to carry on his early success, due to frequent issues with the other side of the law, most notably speeding violations and charges over gun possession. Fields wasn’t just a cousin to Lil Durk, or a cherished member of the Drill movement he helped propagate – he was also a close friend of Lil Jojo, the slain rapper many believe Chief Keef consorted to kill, by his own Twitter confessions. As for Lil Mister’s killing, law enforcement officials haven’t come up with a single suspect at this early stage of the investigation.
