Kurl Songx says he is still in the game

When Afro Pop artiste, Kurl Songx released his debut Jennifer Lomotey in 2017, he won a lot of admiration and his followers appreciated his music talent and anticipated a flourishing music career in the coming years.

However, the performance of the Highly Spiritual artiste hasn’t been encouraging particularly when the likes of Kuami Eugene, KiDi, King Promise and Kwesi Arthur who rose to prominence on the music scene at the time he did are still forces to reckon with.

But while concerns about his performance have been raised by industry players such as Highlife artiste, KK Fosu who recently criticised Highly Spiritual for his music woes, Kurl Songx has assured well-wishers and his fans that all is well with him and that it is too early for anyone to rule him out of the game.

“I have heard all the concerns but I don’t think I have become a spent force yet. For me, it is too early for anyone to rule me out of the game because I’m still in it. Contrary to what is out there that I have fizzled out, I can say that is not true because I have been very busy in the studios with my debut album.

“Last year, for instance, I released Trumpet and did some features as well and I’m still working on new songs. My latest song, Lobe, released few weeks ago.

“Perhaps, I haven’t been consistent with my releases, hence, the long silence after Trumpet but I can say that it will be a thing of the past now because I have put in a lot of work in the past year and the results will show soon,” Kurl Songx said.

When he entered the music scene with his controversial song Jennifer Lomotey featuring Sarkodie, Kurl Songx drew a lot of comparisons to the popular Ghanaian singer/rapper, Castro.

It was high praise for him considering Castro’s impact on the Ghanaian music industry but he wanted to carve his own identity and he set out to do that with a number of songs including Whistle which also featured Sarkodie and Feeling which featured late Dancehall star, Ebony.

Kurl Songx received good reviews and performed on a number of big stages and the recognition earned him four nominations—Best New Artiste, Best Collaboration, Best Highlife Song and Best Male Vocalist at last year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA).

But just a year after getting four nods at the VGMA, Kurl Songx couldn’t bag a single nomination this year but says he is unfazed because he didn’t release many songs in the year under review.

When asked if he envied the progress of his colleagues who shot to fame at the same time as he and are very big now, he said he had “no iota of jealousy” in him.

“Not at all, whatever I feel is far from envy for my brothers. As I said earlier, I had not been consistent with my music as they did and that obviously gave them the platform.

“Hence, I’m staying focused this year by releasing more songs,” Kurl Songx stated.

On his pick for this year’s VGMA Artiste of the Year, the Feeling artiste said ‘may the best artiste win the ultimate award.”

He also appealed to leaders of the nation to invest in the arts.

“The media should lead the campaign to get our leaders to give attention to and invest in the creative arts since that will boost the industry’s growth. Nigeria has done it and it is possible with us,” he said.
