Posting on their social media channels, the League Two club responded to a newspaper report that said Swift wanted to buy the Magpies.

The owners of the world’s oldest football league club issued the tongue-in-cheek statement on Friday.

Chris and Alex Reedtz added they were sorry to “disappoint the Swifties in our fanbase”.

The Weekend Sport newspaper reported Swift – famous for hits like Shake It Off, Blank Space, Bad Blood, Style and Love Story – wanted to follow in the footsteps of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney who have bought fellow League Two club Wrexham.

In a statement – packed with references to Swift’s hits – the Reedtz brothers said: “As sorry as we are to disappoint the Swifties in our fanbase, we’re going to have to shake this story off.

“There’s certainly no bad blood between ourselves and Taylor, but at such an exciting time for us and the club, she surely couldn’t have believed we would relinquish our control.”

The statement added: “We’ll leave a blank space in tomorrow’s pre-match play list for a track from her newly-released 1989 album as a gesture of goodwill.”

The club currently sit in second in League Two following their promotion from the National League earlier this year.
