We’ll help reduce adverse effect of Weija dam spillage – MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive Officer for Weija Gbawe, Patrick Kumor, has indicated that plans are underway to mitigate the impact of the spillage of the Weija Dam.

This follows a recent announcement by the Ghana Water Company Limited that it would begin spilling excess water from the dam as part of a routine safety measure.

This is to ensure that the water is kept below the safe operating level of the dam in order to prevent it from collapsing.

The exercise has over the years been characterised with the flooding and destruction of homes along the waterway but speaking to Citi News the MCE for the area, Parick Kumor relayed that the assembly had begun dredging water bodies in some of the areas to prevent flooding.

“The NADMO people are on the field as I talk to you. They are sensitizing the people and creating awareness of the spillage and those that we need to move out of those places will be moved. We have started dredging some two weeks ago because we know we were going to have the situation coming in. We dredged areas like Weija, Tetegu, Oblogo and some parts of McCarthy Hill just to make sure we mitigate the situation.”

“Last year when I came, I told you I was going to write to works and housing. True to my words I did and we got a response from the hydro department. If you go Tetegu bridge right now, there is a machine dredging the Densu for the first time. We might not be able to complete the whole process before the spillage. We believe that we have taken quite a lot of steps to make sure that the damage that will come will not be excessive like last year,” he said.

Communities likely to be affected include; Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kope, Tsokome and surrounding communities.

Property owners and residents are advised to evacuate or take immediate precautionary measures to protect life and property.

In 2016, a number of communities in the catchment area of the Weija Dam in the Ga South Municipality were submerged, following the spillage of the dam by the GWCL.

Communities such as Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kokpe were inundated, while others, including Glefe and Opetekwei, are also seriously affected.
