Hollywood spy thriller film ‘Kandahar’ hit theatres in the USA on 26th May, 2023. Now, barely three weeks later, ‘Kandahar’ is all set to premiere on streaming in India. The film releases on Prime Video India on 16th June, which is this Friday. The three-week OTT premiere must be the quickest that a Hollywood film has arrived on streaming, in recent times.
The fact is that ‘Kandahar’ failed to set the cash registers ringing at ticket windows across the world. It also didn’t enthuse critics and audiences, with its commonplace, done-to-death premise. ‘Kandahar’ stars Gerard Butler in the lead role, alongside Indian actor Ali Fazal and Iranian-American actor Navid Negahban, of Homeland and 24 fame.Bahador Foladi, Nina Toussaint-White, Tom Rhys Harries, Vassilis Koukalani, Mark Arnold, Corey Johnson, and Travis Fimmel form the rest of the cast.
The film is set in the backdrop of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, though it has been shot mostly in Saudi Arabia, the first big budget Hollywood film to do so.
Gerard Butler plays an undercover CIA operative, who is stuck in hostile territory in Afghanistan after his cover is blown. He must get out of the country before elite special forces hunt him down. In order to do so, he must reach an extraction point in Kandahar, along with his Afghani translator.
Kandahar is produced by Thunder Road Films, who’ve produced the John Wick film series. Capstone is the co-producer of the film. Director Ric Roman Waugh is helming the project. Former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune has written the screenplay of the film.
