“You were asking me earlier about what it means to be like the first woman,” Harris told Barrymore, 49, in a clip of their conversation that was shared on the talk show’s Instagram account. “And you know, it’s funny because people still gotta get used to this, right?”

“I mean, my staff, for example, sometimes they’ll show me little things that just amuse me. Like, apparently, some people love to talk about the way I laugh,” the vice president continued.

The Charlie’s Angels alum chimed in to share a compliment. “Oh, yes. I love your laugh,” she said.

Harris then explained why her laugh holds a special place in her heart.

“I have my mother’s laugh and I grew up around a bunch of women in particular who laughed from the belly. They laughed — they would sit around the kitchen and drinking their coffee, telling big stories with big laughs,” Harris said.

The vice president explained why she would never hide her happiness for anyone, adding that she’s “never gonna be” the type of person to downplay her laugh with a coy giggle.

“I’m just not that person, and I think it’s really important for us to remind each other and, and our younger ones don’t be confined to other people’s perception about what this looks like, how you should act in order to be. Right? It’s really important. It’s, it’s important,” she said as the audience applauded.

Barrymore added, “I love your laugh and I love that message.”

Harris reflected on how her family is a source of her happiness when she’s not at the White House in an exclusive November 2023 interview with PEOPLE.

“I am my happiest self when generations in my family are getting together and I’m cooking,” Harris said at the time.

She recalled how it made her feel to have her loved ones together for a wedding weekend.

“My baby nieces, my husband gets up early and does his coffee and whatever, and they just came running in my room and then jumped in bed with me, and we just talked and laughed,” she told PEOPLE.
