After the pressure and difficulties of the role that the actor spoke about, fans were not surprised in the slightest to see Holland had delivered a hugely impactful performance. The actor first hit the mainstream as the iconic beloved nerd-turned-superhero Peter Parker in the most recent “Spiderman” franchise alongside now girlfriend and acclaimed actress Zendaya.

The character is Holland’s first foray into LGBTQ+ representation. Some fans applauded his ability to get into a character so separate from his personal life.

Others joked that both Holland and Zendaya have primarily refrained from filming intimate scenes in their films and television shows. Oddly enough, both of the couple’s recent projects feature intimate scenes, with Zendaya’s appearing in the upcoming sports romantic comedy “Challengers.”

While some criticized Holland for playing a gay character, many were quick to come to the actor’s defense, and remind audiences that the point of acting was to get into unique perspectives.

One Twitter user reminded critics that all three actors who have played Spiderman in different franchises (Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland), have played gay characters throughout their respective careers.

Despite the show’s success with fans, “The Crowded Room” did receive negative reviews among some critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critical score sits at a 30 percent, while the audience score reached a whopping 90 percent. Mental health professionals and clinically diagnosed dissociative identity disorder patients are applauding the show’s careful look at the rare illness.
